Expectations of Year 11 outlined

Expectations of Year 11 outlined

Posted: 17th October 2018

A Year 11 expectation evening has been held at Epping St John’s School so families can fully support children in their studies.

The expectation evening forms part of the Year 11 strategy for students in their final year where data is regularly assessed and interventions put into place when the data suggests they are needed.

Eposi Ewome, director of learning Year 10 and 11, said: “The aim of expectations evening was to talk about the Year 11 strategy, exam stress, exam requirements, the support we offer, how parents can support the school and their children and how students can support themselves in terms of accepting what we are offering them.

“We also speak to parents about the importance of students getting enough sleep. Occasionally, students might say they feel ill or have a headache, when it turns out they have not had enough sleep. It’s also important they do things they enjoy during Year 11, such as socialising; it’s not just about learning, it’s also about having fun.”

The school puts on weekly aspirations sessions after school for Year 11 students to complete extra revision with their subject teachers. These opportunities are also on offer during school holidays.

Mrs Ewome said: “When students stay after school, they get more one-to-one or small group support which really benefits them.

“If parents understand more about what’s going on at school, they can support their children better at home. Students have access to amazing revision resources at school which they can also use from home.”

Parents were also told about the school’s growing sixth form.

Executive head Stephen Hehir said: “It is vital that Year 11 students and their parents/carers are aware of all the support the school is providing for them over the course of their final GCSE year.

“There is a lot of exam pressure in Year 11. We believe through events such as the Year 11 expectation evening students and parents/carers are given the best advice to support them to reach their potential next summer and to achieve highly.

“Well done to all students, parents/carers and staff for attending and making this night a success!”
