Sixth Form Open Evening
Posted: 28th October 2018Epping St John’s School Sixth Form has been on a journey of transformation since relaunching recently.
Students who are halfway through their courses showed signs of success this summer as they received their interim results.
The busy sixth form is keen for potential students to find out more by going along to an open evening in November.
Natalie Revell, Year 12 and 13 lead, is proud of what the sixth form has to offer, with -
* a new student council launched for Year 12 and 13 with the aim of promoting the sixth form in the community and on social media and giving students a voice. Members filled out application forms and were interviewed for one of the 16 memberships, taking on responsibility for charity, enrichment, wellbeing and teaching and learning
* 12 students, with an interest in a teaching career, undertaking a teaching assistant course. They spend time in the classroom each week to gain experience as teaching assistants and to help with their UCAS applications.
* industry experts and university representatives visiting students fortnightly to talk about opportunities open to them. Students are also visiting universities, such as Anglia Ruskin.
* enrichment activities to give students a variety of experiences to put on their personal statements and applications for university. Students write a proposal to be considered by the head if they want a new enrichment opportunity introduced, giving them responsibility.
* Year 13 hosting a cake sale which raised more than £400 for Macmillan at the school open evening recently and Epping St John’s Bake-Off seeing students and staff competing against each other.
Ms Revell said: “It’s all about giving students direction and encouraging them to start thinking about whether they are going on to university or an apprenticeship or into work. We also want them to enjoy life at sixth form.
“Students are really proud of the sixth form and are keen to promote it to prospective students. Our open evening will give an opportunity for prospective students to speak with subject teachers, have a tour of the school and sign up for a place.
“The sixth form has grown and there’s a lot going on this year already.” Mr. Hehir Executive head Stephen Hehir said “The sixth form is one of the biggest strengths of Epping St John’s. Students have the opportunity to study advanced courses in state-of-the-art facilities, staff have the opportunity to teach to A-level and lower year groups can benefit from our excellent Year 12 and 13 role models.
“Well done to all students, parents/carers and staff connected with our growing sixth form.”
Prospective students are invited to go along to the open evening on November 12, between 6pm and 8.30pm. The head of sixth form will give a talk at 6.45pm.
