New Science Club Launched
Posted: 13th November 2018The exciting possibilities of science are being enjoyed by students in Epping.
Year 7 and 8 students have joined a new after-school science club at Epping St John’s School to explore the subject in more depth.
Chris Reeder, head of Key Stage 3 and 5 science, said: “The club is all about getting students to experience a different side to science which is not on the curriculum and to indulge in more of the practical side. It is not focused on the academic side of science, it’s all about enjoying science and sparking their interest. They see cool things on the internet and we can let them experience them in the club as we are not having to follow the curriculum.
“If we want students to take science through to A-level, we need to stimulate their interest early and not leave it until Year 11 as their minds are already made up by then.
“We want them to enjoy the subject as much as they can. They are getting really enthusiastic and excited about the practicals we have planned.”
The title of Scientist of the Week is being awarded in the club as well as in science lessons and a trip is being planned to Thorpe Park where students will be challenged to design a rollercoaster.
Executive head Stephen Hehir said: “It is wonderful that students at Epping St John’s have this experience to explore in more depth the wonders and fun of science. This will lead more students at our school to become the scientific leaders of tomorrow!
“Well done to all staff and students connected with this new adventure.”
